Joanna Harcourt-Smith – On ‘Tripping the Bardo with Timothy Leary’

Interview sample, Joanna Harcourt-Smith.

Joanna Harcourt-Smith. Joanna is a writer and podcaster, the longtime partner of Dr. Timothy Leary and author of Tripping the Bardo with Timothy Leary. She talks about the creative process and writing her book; the most interesting parts of Timothy Leary’s writing and work at Harvard, as well as finding lost love letters Timothy had written to her from prison – now on display at the National Museum in Washington D.C. A find which bizarrely includes a bunch of drawings I’d given to Joanna, in 1972, of us, a house and a spaceship.

Joanna Harcourt-Smith’s whole interview – 31 Min

In Joanna’s book, ‘Tripping the Bardo with Timothy Leary’, as well as in Part 4 of my E-Book, ‘An Unusual Life’, we meet Joanna in Spain and travel to the US where dad and Joanna try and connect money from the Rolling Stones to the McGovern campaign against Nixon. Returning to Switzerland we collectively meet Timothy Leary. Tim and Joanna begin an affair and take off to Afghanistan via Lebanon. In Afghanistan they are busted by the feds and taken back to the US. Tim is then incarcerated and so begins Joanna’s long task of trying to get him released. Those are the nuts and bolts of her book – which features my family and me in the first part – and is a phenomenal read.
